The Space.

Nestled within the chic fashion district of Claremont, ABH Studio was crafted by designers with a key focus on the client experience: overall wellness - not just hair.

“The new salon looks amazing. Can you tell me a little bit about it?”

- THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

It was definitely a challenge planning both a new salon & wedding at the same time -however, thankfully it worked out perfectly.

The whole design / build was fast tracked & completed within four months so it was definitely GO GO GO.

I was so incredibly lucky to have my partner Brock Higgins to organise the build & we worked with a local upcoming designer Lucy Mayne Dennis who completely understood & supported my vision.

We wanted something that was true to my personal aesthetic, it was also really important to me to create a new experience for clients. Steering away from what you would traditionally expect from a hair salon - heavy branding, fast paced flashy commercial energy etc.

A space that allows a person to slow down, take a pause from their busy life, breathe & have a rare moment of self-love.

As much as the Pandemic took a huge toll on mental health - what I was able to take away from that experience was the importance of self-care & really nurturing your mental wellbeing in trying times.

My vision was less hair-salon, more wellness centre.

Clients can expect not only amazing results from their colour & styling, but also walk out feeling refreshed and rejuvenated mentally.

Understandably, there were restrictions as to how far I could go with this vision as the salon had to be operational - but I wanted to really capture the moments of calm one can experience in something as 'humdrum' as a hair salon.

If you think about it, one of the only common forms of self-care people practice is going to have their hair done. It's something completely “socially acceptable” that is so much more than a fresh head of highlights.

Walking into a beautiful space, being warmly welcomed & asked about what's going on in your life, laying down in comfortable silence while someone gently massages your head - Personally that is pure bliss to me. Taking a moment out of a busy schedule to really pause & just be.

With the help of my gorgeous husband - We crafted organic shapes throughout the salon & utilised natural, neutral tones to evoke the sense of calm from the moment you enter the space.

The smells, the music, the gently flowing fabrics - they influence clients to relax their shoulders & know this is their safe space.

Everyone loves getting to the basin, it's honestly the most enjoyable part of the whole service.

Working as best we could within the area - we separated the basin from the rest of the space with a raised stone platform & floor-to-ceiling flowing fabrics. We wanted to really invest in what is the most tranquil part of the hairdressing experience.

As much as I wanted a beautiful nature soundscape playing in this area, unfortunately it wasn’t viable for the salon.

- but never say never!
